Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my floor feel so cold?

Your floor is in contact with the coldest air both inside and out. The underfloor space can be a very cold windy place. Inside, the warmest of your winter heating floats to the ceiling leaving the coolest air on the floor. The usual thickness of timber flooring is 19mm both for timber and chipboard. Neither are very good insulators. That is, they quite readily conduct heat from one side to the other. Your coolest air is getting continuously cooler. Adding to that, your feet make a good connection with the floor, so you can begin to see why it doesn't take very long for you to feel cold.

Why use this combination of insulation materials?

Most insulation manufacturers promote their own version of underfloor insulation material and techniques. Many of these techniques are only for use at construction time and not suitable for retrofitting. Because we are not restricted to using any one manufacturer's products, we have chosen our materials and methods to produce the best possible solution. Polyester is hydrophobic (does not absorb water). Polyester provide a good level of insulation without trapping moisture near the timber surface. This is important to avoid fungal infestation leading to dry rot. The thermo - reflective blanket keeps the wind out of the polyester, allowing it to perform at peak no matter what the prevailing conditions. It also provides a tough vermin barrier to keep pests out of the insulated areas and adds another layer of insulative protection. That's why our underfloor insulation can make a dramatic difference.

How effective is under floor insulation?

Our combination of products, combined with our high quality installation focus, will make your floor four times more thermally effective than a timber floor and nearly three times as effective as a carpeted timber floor.

What is the minimum clearance needed to be able to insulate underneath the floor?

At least 400mm clearance is required. Heating ducts often restricts access to under floor areas. If you are considering underfloor insulation, it is best to check what areas are accessible first.

Can any timber floor be insulated?

Pretty much any timber floor can be insulated provided there is adequate sub-floor access. A minimum ground clearance of about 400mm and an access point large enough to easily fit a person through are required.

Can you insulate a concrete slab?

Whilst the text books say that a slab on ground can be insulated, we have not seen one yet. If you know of one, please let us know! Raised concrete slabs can be insulated using a different technique that we have developed.

Will underfloor insulation make my home cooler in summer?

In most cases you can expect a moderate summer benefit. Usually, this is because the floor is not a major source of summer heat when compared with windows, ceiling and walls. However, if your home is elevated then a much greater summer benefit can be expected from underfloor insulation.

What guarantees do you provide?

50 Year Durability Warranty on our polyester, 15 years residential product warranty on our thermo-reflective blanket. 10 years on our installation.

Are you insured?

Most certainly! We are fully insured - public liability, professional indemnity and workers compensation.
